Sept. 17 – Acceleration and VT graphs

Acceleration

Watch this....


Describe the motion of the cars in the drag race.
  - At the beginning, the speed was slow.
  - At the end, the speed was very fast
  - There was a change in speed

  • Uniform motion = constant velocity = no acceleration
  • Non-Uniform motion = velocity is not constant = acceleration


A change in speed can be written as:
              ∆v = v(final) – v(initial)

This change takes time, ∆t.

We call this rate of change acceleration.
          a = ∆v / ∆t


Example: A Ferrari 458 can go from 0.0 km/h to 100. km/h in 3.4 seconds.  a) What is its acceleration?   b) How long will it take to reach its maximum speed of 325 km/h.

I explained what a tangent line is and how to create a VT graph based on the DT graph.

You can now do homework from Day 4 in the Unit Outline.
